G7 notified of possible attack on Israel by Iran
Iran could launch an attack on Israel as soon as Monday. This was stated by different American and Israeli officials who were interviewed by the news site Axios. The assumption is that both Iran and Hezbollah are working on the details but that there will be a form of retaliation. Hezbollah is said to be seeking revenge for the death of commander Fuad Shukr earlier this week in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard, itself announced on Saturday that it would retaliate “at the right time and in the right way” for the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. He was killed on Iranian soil earlier this week. Iran, an ally of Hamas, accuses Israel of the murder.
If Iran directly attacks Israel this would most likely trigger a reaction from the Israeli side. Last April Iran also launched nearly 350 attack drones and rockets towards Israel, which were intercepted by Israel, The U.S. and their allies. Currently there is a lot of behind the scenes communication on the diplomatic front to try to limit the attacks and restraint from all parties. In the meantime the U.S. is boosting its forces in the region for defensive purposes according to Blinken.
October 7, 2023
On October 7 2023 the terrorist organization Hamas waged the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. The operation was well planned and targeted only civilians and was part of the plan of Hamas to destroy the Israeli state as is stated in its charter. Israel has been waging an asymmetric war against Hamas ever since, that gradually spread to Hezbollah openly participating into the conflict as well. Both Hamas and Hezbollah operate with the support of Iran and both are targeting civilians openly in order to spread terror.
Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31, 2024, by Israel as a retaliation for the October 7 attack. However, this attack has now spurred Iran which wants to retaliate against this attack, despite diplomatic efforts for a cease fire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.
Despite recent media outlets quoting Iranian officials that they do not strive for a regional war, but only retaliation for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the chance of the conflict spreading regionally is substantial.
