In areas of the world where government structures are underdeveloped or are facing instability, NGOs perform major civil society functions in lieu of government powers. Since the 1990’s, NGO registered entities have proliferated around the world in response to the creation of young nation states. Current estimates citing the amount of registered NGOs are thought to severely underreport the actual data. Though NGOs perform essential functions, the actions of their work can act in contrast to their mission due to the nature of funding and dependency on donor states that make international NGO efforts possible.
